Programs
Sexual Abuse Intervention Programs
were developed and funded by the Ministry of Health in 1991, in response to
a serious and growing need to provide counseling and support to children and
teens who have experienced sexual abuse. The Sexual Abuse Intervention
Program at the Family Resource Centre currently receives funding for 6.25
hours per week.
The Sexual Abuse Intervention Program provides specialized services to
children and youth, under the age of 19, who have been sexually abused. In
our program, we provide counseling, assessment and educational training. We
offer counseling and support to the abused children and to their caregivers
and families.
Our intervention strategies are sensitive to the unique needs of the child
or teen who has experienced sexual abuse. We take into account the person's
age, their developmental level, their cultural background and the severity
of the trauma of the abuse.
The Ministry of Children and Family Development stipulates that an initial
investigation of the abuse must be completed by the R.C.M.P. and the
Ministry of Children and Family Development before we are able to become
involved with a client. The reason for this regulation, is so that the
evidence will not be contaminated by our own involvement.
Referrals may come form other community agencies or through the client
intake process of the Family Resource Centre.
While it is very disturbing to realize that many children and teens do
experience sexual abuse, the positive aspect is that our community has a
program that is specifically designed to help them heal and recover from the
trauma. The Sexual Abuse Intervention Program is providing a much needed and
valuable service to children, teens and their families.
