Safe Homes Program Description

We help women and children escape violence and abuse.

You don’t have to leave if you call us, we’re here to support you in any way we can. We’ll just listen if need be. You are not alone.

We offer a 24 hour on-call Emergency service and:

1) Emergency accommodation (for up to 5 nights in private and confidential operator’s homes outside of your community)
2) Crisis and emotional support
3) Individual consultation/planning
4) Transportation
5) Information
6) Referral services
7) Advocacy
8) Client and public education
9) Accompaniment to appointments
10) Support to family and friends
11) Resource source
12) Transportation to our regional safe home where women can stay for up to one month
13) NON-JUDGMENTAL UNDERSTANDING
14) CONFIDENTIALITY
15) COMPASSION

Abuse is:

Any way in which one human being is trying to control or have power over another.

Constant criticism

Breaking down partner’s belief system (culture/religion)

Making partner watch while abusing pets or children

bullet

Denying partner access to or the opportunity to keep friends, social contacts, outside interests

bullet

Jealousy

bullet

Making family contact difficult

bullet

Threats to kill or hurt children, pets or friends

bullet

Destruction of property

bullet

Controlling partner’s talk

bullet

Making partner account for every minute and every action

bullet

Threats to prove partner is an unfit mother

bullet

Threats of suicide

bullet

Controlling with fear

bullet

Allowing partner no money of her own or no opportunity to improve her earning capacity

Forcing partner to account for every penny

bullet

Pushing, shoving, slapping, punching, kicking

bullet

Breaking bones, knifing, shooting or use of other weapons

Locking out of one’s own home

Abandoning in an unsafe place

Murder

Forced unwanted sex

Demanding that partner wear more (or less) provocative clothing

Forced sex with objects, friends or animals

Insisting that partner act out pornographic fantasies

Denial of partner’s sexuality
