Signs and Symptoms of Suicidal Behavior

There are four main categories of signs and symptoms of suicidal behavior:

  1. Thoughts and/or statements expressed by the suicidal person:
    bulletmy family would be better off without me
    bulletI'm going to end it all
    bulletI won't be around much longer
    bulletI can't stand it any longer
    bulletI wish I were dead, I hate myself
    bulletAll of my problems will soon be over
    bulletI won't be needing these things right now.
    bulletI can't do anything right
    bulletI'll show you
    bulletI'm going to get even
    bulletI'll go someplace where no one can ever hurt me again
     
  2. Physical symptoms:
    bulletChange in or loss of appetite or weight
    bulletSleep disturbances - too much or too little
    bulletLoss of interest in appearance
    bulletSelf-mutilation, intentional and through accidents
    bulletLack of energy
    bulletLoss of sexual drive
    bullethyper activity
    bulletphysical health complaints
    bulletHyper compulsivity, ritualizing activities
     
  3. Emotional symptoms and feelings:
    bulletAnxiety and fear
    bulletUnreal expectations about performance
    bulletDespondency, sadness
    bulletMood swings, from hostility to apathy
    bulletFeelings of helplessness or hopelessness
    bulletFeelings of loss (anticipated, real or imagined)
    bulletFeelings of being isolated
    bulletGuilt
    bulletFeelings of worthlessness
     
  4. Behavioral symptoms:
    bulletWithdrawal from family, friends, work and school
    bulletInactive
    bulletFrequent, irrational changes in behavior
    bulletDifficultly concentrating
    bulletImpulsiveness, recklessness
    bulletAbuse of alcohol/drugs/food/TV
    bulletPeaceful and accepting: calm before the storm

Other signs include:
bulletgiving away favorite possessions
bulletMaking a will
bulletPutting home and business affairs in order
bulletSaying good-byes
bulletMaking sarcastic jokes about one's self-worth

High-risk groups for suicide include:
bulletMale, particularly young or old
bulletAboriginal, especially young and male
bulletHistory of psychiatric difficulties
bulletPerson bereaved by suicide
bulletFemale, pregnant and with a history of sexual abuse
bulletProblems with alcohol/drugs
bulletPrevious suicide attempts
bulletHistory of abuse or recent abuse; entering flashback stage of post-traumatic stress disorder
bulletRecent major loss: death of or separation from loved one, loss of job, loss of sense of identity or sense of meaning
